MY LIFE , MY STYLE
The village of Saint-Etienne-la-Thillaye is a beauty spot in the Basse-Normandie region, in north-west France. It is famous for its lush countryside, serenity and wonderful views, but the real reason it attracts high-profile residents (Chanel’s owners the Wertheimer brothers have an estate there) is the horses. The rich grass in the area is perfect for breeding race horses, and It is peppered with stud farms and stables. It is this landscape that attracted Cecilia Bonstrom, the Swedish born, Paris-based, 43-year-old creative director of Zadig&Voltaire , in her search for a house in the French countryside to provide an idyllic weekend getaway.
Transforming an abandoned stud farm into a home comes with its own challenges, but Bonstrom – an ambitious, determined and creative mother of three – was more than up to the job. After all, this is a woman who renounced a successful modelling career at 33 to work at Zadig & Voltaire(which she had always admired) as a junior assistant in 2003, and rose to become creative director just three years later. ‘Zadig& Voltaire only had two shops, both in Paris, when I first fell in love with its unique, modern aesthetic at the end of the Nineties,’says Bonstrom. ‘It already had a following of cool French actresses such as Béatrice Dalle and Marion Cotillard, but it was still quite niche. I just felt it was tapping into some-thing new, something I wanted to be part of.’
At the time, says Bonstrom, ‘fashion was preoccupied with the drama of Jean Paul Gaultier or the complex artistry of Issey Miyake, but Zadig was about a sort of effortlessness which seemed wonderful to me. It had this rock ’n’ roll attitude and was all a bit distressed, and that felt natural and cool.’ The architecture of the shops was appealing because it channelled the simplicity and practicality of Scandinavian architecture, which she grew up with. Today, Zadig& Voltaire has 200 stores worldwide. ‘It has a clearly defined DNA and understands what women want from their clothes,’ she says.
As Bonstrom travels a great deal for work and is based in Paris, she and her family – her husband and three sons, Victor, 13; Nils,11; and two-year-old Emil– wanted somewhere to escape to. When they came upon the stable buildings and the old manoir, which had been abandoned for seven years, they knew they had discovered something magical and challenging.
‘It was in a horrible state when we first found it,’ says Bonstrom. ‘We forced ourselves to live in it as it was, so that we could make the right decisions about which horse boxes to keep and what to destroy. We demolished the main part of the training stables but kept the brick, and used it to join up with the original house. So you have a typical Normandy-style house connected to a very modern space.’
The two levels were knocked down to make one huge level with seven-metre-high ceilings in the TV-room and a beautiful indoor pool. Bonstrom is particularly proud of the 360-degree view she has created for the house: on one side is a perfect English country garden and on the other is a wild meadow, so that you are surrounded by nature at all times.
The children’s rooms are simple and charming. Bonstrom’s 14-year-old stepdaughter Manon often stays, and her room acts as a den for the entire family. They built the kitchen from scratch and kept the interiors simple and uncluttered with oversize Christian Liaigre sofas in the salon, Charlotte Perriand chairs in the kitchen, oak floorboards throughout and khaki or beige paint on the walls and ceilings. ‘It’s the space that creates this house, not the decoration,’ says Bonstrom.
Fussy interiors are not Bonstrom’s thing, but she and her husband are avid collectors of modern art, and there are extraordinary pieces dotted about. They own works by Rudolph Stingel, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Damien Hirst, and the generous heights and interesting spaces perfectly house their impressive collection.
One of the highlights is a remarkable sculpture by the Austrian artist Franz West that sits, irreverently, by the pool: a four-metre-long pink snake-like creature made of resin, steel and glass fibre. Just like the decisions that inform her Zadig & Voltaire designs, Bonstrom’s choices for her homes are always unique, ambitious and cool.
