While those bezels are huge, they do come with useful page-turningbuttons, and having ample space for your thumb isn’t the worst thing in theworld for this kind of device. The Kindle platform still has itsannoyances—e.g., not supporting a few open source book files—but it’s still thedefault for most publishers of note, and oftentimes its books are lessexpensive than they are elsewhere. It’s not hard to find what you want. But $250 is a good chunk of change for a single-purposedevice. At $120, the Paperwhite wraps up the essentials for avid readers at amore manageable cost. It puts a thick layer on Android thatheavily pushes Amazon’s own services,it’s technically and physically inferior to the iPad in every way, and Amazonputs ads on the lock screen by default. Another option we like is Lenovo’sThinkPad X1 Yoga. Its keyboard is a dream, it hasmore ports and connectivity options than most Ultrabooks of its size (includinga mini Ethernet port, albeit one that requires a dongle), and we find theclassic ThinkPad design to still clean up well, TrackPoint nuband all. The only downside is that the better configurations can bereally expensive.
